Information and Referral:  Our agency operates as a ‘clearing house’ for answering questions and concerns from seniors, their families or support help and others seeking assistance.  If we don’t have an answer or the needed service, we will follow up until any concern is satisfactorily addressed.

Support Groups

*Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group – third Thursday each month, 2:00 p.m.      (Co-sponsored with Alzheimer’s Association)

*Diabetic Support Group – second Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (February, April, June, August, October, December) p.m.
​(Co-sponsored with DeKalb Health).

*Grief Support Group – first Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. (January 3rd)
​(Co-sponsored with Visiting Nurse Community Grief Center).

*Low Vision Support Group – third Thursday each month, 1:15 p.m.
(Co-sponsored with the League for the Blind and Disabled)

Senior Pak 

Every other week a grocery bag of 20 pounds of food is offered free of charge to eligible senior citizens through sponsorship of $125.00 per year.  Sponsored locally in cooperation with Community Harvest Food Bank of Fort Wayne. Contact Heimach Center for more information.

Farm Wagon
Monday mornings (except holidays) Community Harvest Food Bank of Fort Wayne sends a truck to the Center offering a variety of farm produce, available to anyone 18 years of age and over. Doors open at 8:30 am and registration is required each week.







Small Food Pantry 
Non-perishables available to help in emergencies when other entities aren’t available.

Hours are 8:30 am-11:15 am, T-F.

A donation container is located in the main lobby for those who are able and wish to

share. Call 925-3311 for a current list of items needed.


SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program)

The key word is “information”.  SHIP volunteers

do not sell anything. 

Counselors offer FREE assistance to Medicare beneficiaries who have concerns or questions about health insurance, prescription drug programs and extra help.


Tax Assistance (February-April)

DeKalb County Council on Aging is pleased to offer tax preparation for DeKalb County residents. Jerry Steffen and trained staff provide this service during tax season.

Appointments are available and preference is given to DeKalb County Seniors age 50+ (although other ages will be served). Call the Heimach Center for information regarding appointment times and what to bring with you at your appointed time.



Medical Equipment Loan Program 
Shower chairs, portable potty chairs, raised toilet seats, toilet arms, walkers, canes, crutches are available for temporary use at home.

Volunteer Opportunities 

Volunteers are essential to the many services and

programs provided by the DeKalb County Council on Aging; the agency invites interested persons to contact the center for volunteer opportunities.


Foot Care

Carol Snyder of “A Lighter Step”provides affordable monthly foot and toenail care.


Tai Chi Instruction


Greg Vick Instructor – Tai Chi takes place on Thursday mornings from 10-11 am. 
No registration is required. Tai Chi sessions are $3.




Yoga Instruction  2018

Cathy Vick, a skilled Yoga instructor will lead Chair and Traditional Yoga classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings.  Come join a class this week!

Chair Yoga Sessions meet 9:30-10:30 am.  Traditional Yoga follows from 10:30-11:30.

Each session is $3 and reservations are not required.


Also available:  pamphlet racks, lending library for Diabetic,

Dementia and other issues, blood pressure checks, hearing

screenings and annual flu shots.
